Is Ahrefs More Accurate Than Moz

Is Ahrefs More Accurate Than Moz? My Honest Opinion

Hello guys, welcome back to my blog. Today I am going to answer another question I get a lot in my DMs, is Ahrefs more accurate than Moz. I have used both tools on my own websites for quite some time, so I am not just repeating what other blogs say, I am telling you what I actually feel after using them daily. In this post I will compare the backlink data, the Domain Authority vs Domain Rating scores, the keyword numbers, and my own honest opinion. So lets get into it.

Is Ahrefs More Accurate Than Moz for SEO in 2027?

If you ask me directly, is Ahrefs more accurate than Moz, my honest answer is yes, mostly, especially when it comes to backlink data and keyword research. From my own experience, Ahrefs crawler is more active and its numbers update faster then Moz. Moz is still a good tool, and I do not think it is bad, but the freshness of data feels a bit behind Ahrefs in my daily use. I will explain why below with proper facts and tables so you can decide for yourself too.

What is Ahrefs and What is Moz

Before I compare them, let me quickly tell you what both tools actually do, in case you are new to SEO.

Ahrefs is an all in one SEO tool that started with a strong focus on backlinks. It uses its own crawler called AhrefsBot, which is one of the most active bots on the internet according to Cloudflare Radar. Over time Ahrefs also added keyword research, rank tracking, and site audit tools.

Moz is one of the oldest names in SEO, and honestly I respect them a lot because they basically helped build the whole SEO industry with their blog and their Beginner’s Guide to SEO. Moz Pro gives you keyword research, Link Explorer for backlinks, site audits, and the famous Domain Authority score.

Both tools do a similar job, but the way they crawl the web and show data is quite different, and that is the main reason my opinion leans one way.

My Personal Opinion – Ahrefs vs Moz Data Accuracy

Ok so here is the part you guys actually came for. In my honest opinion, based on using both tools on my own sites, Ahrefs feels more accurate mainly because of two reasons, bigger backlink index and more frequent crawling.

When I check a backlink on my own site in Ahrefs, it usually shows up faster then in Moz’s Link Explorer. I have noticed new backlinks appear in Ahrefs sometimes within a day or two, but in Moz it can take longer for the same link to show. This is just my personal experience guys, not a rule written in stone. Your results can be different depending on your niche and how big your site is.

For keyword research also, I feel Ahrefs numbers match closer to my real Google Search Console traffic compared to Moz’s keyword suggestions.

Ahrefs vs Moz Backlink Data Comparison

Backlinks are a huge part of SEO, so here is a simple table comparing the backlink side of both tools, based on facts I found on their own sites and from Forbes Advisor’s comparison.

PointAhrefsMoz
Own CrawlerYes, called AhrefsBotYes, but crawls less often
Index Update SpeedVery frequent, near real timeSlower, index updates less often
Backlink Metrics ShownBacklinks, Referring Domains, Domain Rating (DR), Ahrefs RankBacklinks, Page Authority, Spam Score, top linking domains
Depth of DataGoes deeper into link detailsBasic metrics, not as deep as Ahrefs

As you can see, on paper Ahrefs crawler is simply more active. AhrefsBot regularly shows up as one of the top crawlers on Cloudflare Radar, which honestly makes a lot of sense why its backlink data feels fresher to me.

Domain Rating vs Domain Authority – Which One is More Accurate?

This is a topic people ask me about a lot, so let me explain in simple words. Ahrefs uses a metric called Domain Rating, or DR, which is based only on backlinks, how many other domains link to a site and how strong those linking domains are. Moz uses Domain Authority, or DA, which is also link based but calculated with Moz’s own formula and their own link index.

Honestly, neither DA nor DR is a real Google ranking factor, both companies say this themselves too, they are just estimate scores made to compare websites against each other. But because Ahrefs index is bigger and updates faster, I personally feel DR reacts quicker to new links compared to DA. So if you are tracking link building progress week to week, I think DR feels more accurate for that purpose.

Ahrefs vs Moz Keyword Research Comparison

Now lets talk about keyword research, which honestly is a big gap between these two tools.

PointAhrefsMoz
Keyword Suggestions28 billion+ keywordsAround 1.25 billion+ keyword suggestions
Ranking Keywords TrackedVery large databaseAround 180 million ranking keywords
Search Volume Accuracy (my opinion)Feels more accurate in my own testingDecent, but smaller sample feels less precise
Keyword Difficulty ScoreYesYes

If you look at the numbers, Ahrefs keyword database is more then 20 times bigger then Moz. I always tell my readers, a bigger and fresher database usually means the tool has more real data to base its estimate on, so it feels more accurate to me in daily use.

Ahrefs vs Moz Pricing Comparison

Price also matters a lot for most of us, so here is a quick table with the current plans.

Plan TypeAhrefsMoz Pro
Entry PlanStarter around $29/moStarter around $49/mo
Mid PlanLite around $129/moStandard around $99/mo
Higher PlanStandard around $249/moMedium around $179/mo
Top PlanAdvanced around $449/moLarge around $299/mo

If you ask me, Ahrefs entry plan is cheaper, but Moz’s higher plans are actually a bit cheaper then Ahrefs’ higher plans. So it really depends on what size of plan you need.

Other Features Worth Knowing

Both tools have more then just backlinks and keyword data, so let me list a few quick points.

  • Site Audit – Both Ahrefs and Moz have a site audit tool to catch technical SEO errors
  • Rank Tracker – Both let you track rankings on Google over time
  • Learning Resources – Moz has one of the best free SEO learning hubs with its Beginner’s Guide to SEO, which I still recommend to beginners
  • Community – Moz also has a strong community and Q&A forum, which Ahrefs does not really have in the same way

For general SEO news and updates, I also like to check Search Engine Land and Google’s own Search Central blog once in a while.

Which One Should You Choose

I know this is the main question, so let me be simple and honest about it.

Choose Ahrefs if:

  • You care a lot about fresh, fast updating backlink data
  • Keyword research and search volume accuracy is your main focus
  • You want a cheap entry plan to start with

Choose Moz if:

  • You are a total beginner and want to learn SEO basics along with the tool
  • You like a simple, easy to understand interface
  • Your budget fits better with Moz’s mid tier plans

Honestly guys, if pure data accuracy is your main concern, especially for backlinks and keywords, I personally lean towards Ahrefs. But Moz is still a solid tool, especially if you are just starting your SEO journey.
